SPECIAL PUBLIC NOTICE:

What You Should Know About Granite Counter Tops and Radon

Recent media reports may have you concerned about the safety of granite counter tops that are poplar in new homes and home remodeling. The EPA has stated that there is not enough information at this time to indicate that granite counter tops pose an immediate health threat. According to a statement on the EPA web site, “EPA does not believe sufficient data exist to conclude that the types of granite commonly used in countertops are significantly increasing indoor radon levels. Some granite may emit gamma radiation above typical background levels.  While radiation levels are not typically high, measurement of specific samples may reveal higher than expected levels on a case-by-case basis.” For more EPA information about radon and granite counter tops, " click here to visit its “Frequent Questions,” page.

NRPP Certified Radon Testing & Mitigation

The U.S. Surgeon General and EPA recommend that all homes be tested for radon. In fact, Kentucky is one of five states with a specific condition that directly effects elevated and sometimes widely varying levels of radon. So it is possible that radon levels will vary from area to area, neighborhood to neighborhood and house to house.

Here are more facts about the dangers of radon in your home:

  • Radon is present in all homes, new or old, with or without basements.
  • Radon is a cancer-causing natural radioactive gas that you can’t see, smell or taste, and it can pose a danger to your family's health.
  • Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers according to EPA estimates.
  • Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in America and claims about 20,000 lives annually.

Tips for Do-It-Yourself Radon Testing

Testing for radon can be done by any homeowner. ServiceUSA Home Inspections does, however, advise consumers to consider the following:

When you purchase a retail radon test, be sure to check the expiration date. Any test beyond 1 year of its expiration, may not provide an accurate reading. The fresher the test, the more accurate the results.

Tests purchased from certified radon laboratories provide the highest quality of accuracy.
